Film Festival Revitalizes & Recruits: Date Change!

The Black Bear Film Festival this week announced a new commitment to the town of Milford and to its many enthusiastic Festival visitors. This year’s event has been re-scheduled away from the busy Columbus Day weekend, when the town is already crowded with visitors, to the following weekend, Friday, October 17th , Saturday, October 18th & Sunday, October 19th.

This change will draw the thousands of Film Festival visitors to the town at a time when local businesses appreciate the chance for extra trade, and allows everyone to enjoy Milford’s annual showcase of independent cinema-making without fighting the holiday congestion. Now in its fourth year, The Black Bear Film Festival hosts a wide range of activities, including screening of superb new films.

"Since tourists already flood into Milford for Columbus Day weekend, the local businesses definitely want something other than that to help extend the season," says Organizer Nancy Pitcher. "We hear them! Changing the Festival date to the following weekend will help bring in people when the town really needs it. The new Board of Directors voted the change unanimously in order to help make the Festival more Milford-friendly."

In keeping with this revitalization, the Festival is calling a Volunteer Meeting on Saturday, July 19, at 10:30am in the rear dining room of The Tom Quick Inn, 411 Broad Street, Milford. (As in the past, the Tom Quick Inn will be the site for the Film Festival’s Opening Night Gala, on Friday, October 17th. )

Anyone and everyone interested in getting involved with the restructured and re-energized Film Festival is invited to attend this Volunteer Meeting. New ideas and expert experience are greatly wanted, and prime spots are available especially in the areas of organizational skills, graphic design, printing, film publicity, programming and fund-raising. Even those without any experience, or who have never gotten their film festival feet wet before, are all desired, for there is plenty to do. If you are a creative person involved in the film business, your contacts and expertise are especially welcomed. If you cannot attend the July 19th meeting, please email info@BlackBearFilm.com and let the Festival know you are interested in helping and/or being a sponsor.

One of the most beloved parts of The Black Bear Film Festival will again grace Milford’s streets prior to the Festival weekend – the Painted Bear Sculptures. Artists are currently submitting plans to the Painted Bear Committee, and later this summer the completed sculptures will be placed around town in front of sponsoring businesses for all to enjoy. As always, the bears will be auctioned during the Festival, a prime fund-raiser for the event. Plans are also underway for the highly successful Film Salon educational lectures and workshops (where everyday people get to meet and hear industry insiders talk about film-making), as well as for the historic films, children’s movies, and the now-heralded, high-quality new feature films selected for the main screenings.

So plan to get involved in Milford’s highly acclaimed, exciting cultural event that always delivers something for everyone. From family fun to thought-provoking talk and soul-soaring films, Milford’s autumn Black Bear Film Festival invites your attention, and more than welcomes your support.
