Celebrities Arrive for Black Bear Film Festival
The lights are about to dim at the Milford Theater for the Third Annual Black Bear Film Festival. With the films come the people who made them; directors, actors, producers, set designers, screenwriters and fashion consultants, all ready to give moviegoers a better understanding of what goes on behind the scenes of filmmaking.
Film rolls on the bigger, better and longer Festival Thursday, October 10 at 8:00 pm. Thats when the weekend kicks off at the Milford Theater with a full-length Surprise Feature film and a short independent film. The titles arent being released. Its a take-a-chance night thats sure to get people talking. The films, discussions and seminars wrap up Monday, October 14.
Friday brings the Gala Night Celebration, with cocktails, dinner, films and fun. Screenings include the short film "Border" and the full-length feature, "Rare Birds", starring William Hurt. After the film, stay around for a discussion with the films director Sturla Gunnersson. Get the inside story on the making of the oddball comedy. Also meet short film director and producer, Annette Solakoglu, the creative mind behind "Border". Get the low-down on the challenges facing independent filmmakers today.
A number of short films will be screened throughout the weekend at the Milford Theater and the Film Salon. These films dont often get the attention they deserve. Festival goers will have the opportunity to speak to the filmmakers, directors and actors themselves after the screenings at both venues. Look for filmmaker Wellington Valenzuela after the screening of his film, "Street Racing" at the Salon Saturday.
"Daughter from Danang" is a Sundance award winning documentary scheduled for Saturday at noon. The film follows a young war orphan from Vietnam who returns to her homeland years later, looking for her birth mother. Director Gail Dolgin will take questions from the audience following the screening.
"Thoth" is an Academy Award winning documentary featuring the life of the street artist of the same name. He will join the audience with his co-producer, Lynne Appelle at the Theater Saturday evening.
Actor David Cale will take to the stage Monday afternoon following the screening of his film "The Slaughter Rule". Its the story of young man recruited for a six-man football team and the lonely man who recruited him.
Two stunning foreign films are sure to please. Audiences will meet director Alberto Mendoza and cast member Leandro Arvelo from the film "House With a View of the Sea". Shot in the foothills of the Andes, its the story of a man and his son torn apart by violence, and what it takes to bring them together again. "Zookeeper" is set in the war-torn Balkans and shows wars effects on man and beast. Director Ralph Ziman will take questions following the film at the Theater.
For the third year, the Black Bear Film Festival celebrates Milfords rich history in the film industry. Milford native Allyn Joslyn was featured in dozens of Hollywood films in the 40s and 50s. The Pike County Historical Society joins Black Bear in remembering Joslyn with a special exhibit, and his films. Joslyns daughter, Linda Joslyn Bishop, and film historian Amy Gallick talk about the actors life and career in film at The Columns in Milford.
Dont forget about the Tri-States Drive-In where youll find two films both Saturday and Sunday nights. Sunday is for children at the drive-in. Meet "Sweetums", a very special member of the Muppet Family, live for the showing of "The Muppet Movie".
The schedule is full and this is just a glimpse at whats planned for the whole weekend. The Film Salon at Milford Borough Hall offers, among other seminars and workshops, a behind the camera peek at production design with returning guests, local residents David and Karen Schultz Gropman - David is an Academy Award nominee.
Tickets are going fast, some shows are already sold out. But dont let that discourage you. Black Bear officials recommend that moviegoers, who seek a last minute ticket, arrive at the Milford Theatre early to form a "Rush Line". People in the "Rush Line" may be able to purchase a ticket dependent on the number of seats available 10 minutes before the screening starts.
