Programming... Year 2000 Festival Films

From the very first year, commitment to offering only the best of current independent cinema or classic underseen innovative films has been really why we do it. In fact, the creative coordinators of the festival do it all year, travelling to various venues, seeking out and exhausting the selection of films that are out there, and then choosing the films to be screened.

THIS YEAR     |     LAST YEAR     |     ARCHIVED YEARS

Films from the 2000 Black Bear Film Festival:Tao of Steve
Play a Slide Show of the Festival's Films from 2000

The 2000 Films were:

The Tao of Steve
A charming, witty, refreshingly sophisticated romantic comedy about an overweight thirty-something slacker who is a remarkable seducer of attractive women.  A true crowd pleaser and award winner at the Sundance 2000 Film Festival.

The Bear
A movie for children of all ages. A captivating and unusual film about a bear who is orphaned and forced to fend for himself. Filmed with a real sense of nature's magnificence.

Shower
A touching and superbly acted comedy-drama about a Chinese yuppie who returns to his hometown, where his elderly father runs a bathhouse with his mentally-challenged brother. A clever tale about how an ancient culture clashes with the modern world.

The Eyes of Tammy Faye
Campy, highly entertaining documentary on the televangelical legend and her fall, with priceless clips going back to the 70's. Narrated by RuPaul.

Two Family House
A frustrated crooner buys a two-family house in order to open a neighborhood bar where he can perform. A version of the American dream where the journey from nice guy to a hero is a rocky road.

The Opportunists
Christopher Walken gives one of his best performances together with Cyndi Lauper. Enjoyable, intelligent and well-aced, this low-key comedy is about a desperate ex-con who's coaxed into cracking one last safe. An award winning film filled with vivid and likeable characters.

Amargosa
A stunning portrait of a unique artist/dancer, Marta Becket, transplanted from New York City to Death Valley Junction, California, performing in her hand-painted Opera House. For this 76 year old woman, the process of creating and performing is her refuge. This inspiring film received a standing ovation at the Los Angeles Film Festival and is an Academy Award Finalist for Best Documentary Feature.

The Color of Paradise
A riveting family portrait, this film tells the story of a young boy who struggles to find God through all his senses, excepting one. He is blind. This fascinating Iranian film is both visually stunning and poignantly depicted.

Walkabout
Lost in the wilderness of Australia, two young children rely on an aborigine in order to survive. Beautifully photographed with a lush score. A cinematic masterpiece.

Young Frankenstein
One of the funniest movies of all times, a hilarious parody of old Frankenstein pictures scripted by Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks.

Nightmare Before Christmas
A ghoulish tale with wicked humor and stunning animation.

A Hard Day's Night
This newly restored print of the Beatles classic is a musical delight. The greatest Rock & Roll comedy adventure of all times!

Little Shop of Horrors
A very entertaining black comedy/musical of a nerdish florist who finds his chance for success with the help of a giant man-eating plant.

"The Informer"
"Feud on Kentucky Hills"
"The Vanishing American"
Rare historic films celebrating Pike County's filmmaking heritage by Director D. W. Griffith (The Informer/Feud on Kentucky Hills) and writer Zane Grey (The Vanishing American). Both "The Informer" and "Feud on Kentucky Hills" were filmed in and around Milford, PA in the early 1900s.
