Programming... Year 2001 Films

Never losing sight of the fact that quality and innovative films are the true mission of the festival, the second year's selection of films continued to amaze and delight as our festival coordinators sought only the best in independent cinema...

THIS YEAR     |     LAST YEAR     |     ARCHIVED YEARS

The 2001 Films were:

Greenfingers
The beauty and delicacy of a flower seem a sharp contrast to the rough exterior of a prison inmate. Yet these two images come together in this story of redemption that not only tickles the funny bone but also touches the soul. (R- rating)

5000 Fingers of Dr. T.
Dr. Seuss's Hollywood classic continues to delight audiences of all ages. Spectacular sets and whimsical musical numbers set the stage for the zany and maniacal Dr. Terwiliker whose ultimate goal is to keep 500 boys captive to play his mile long piano. Young Bart Collins, the hero of the story, finds himself living his nightmare of practicing the piano. "Practice makes perfect", insists Dr. T.

The Road Home

This remarkable, intensely romantic Chinese film directed by Zhang Yimou relates a simple tale of a grown man who goes home to take care of his father's funeral and eventually discovers the touching story behind the romance of his parents.

Happy Accidents
A sexy New York City woman (Marisa Tomei) is about to give up on love when she meets "Mr. Right" (Vincent D'Onofrio). They quickly fall for another but just as the relationship begins to blossom, he starts talking about being a time traveler from the year 2470. "Something off-beat and special". (R-Rating)

Himalaya
Two Nepalese yak caravans race through the Himalayas in the story of a power struggle between generations. A village chief and a headstrong young caravaner fight for leadership of the village as they make their annual salt delivery trek across the Himalayans. Exquisitely photographed on location in Nepal by National Geographic photographer Eric Valli.

Ed Wood
From Tim Burton comes the hilarious, true-life story of the wackiest filmmaker ever to come out of Hollywood. Johnny Depp stars as the high-spirited director who refused to let terrible reviews and hostile studio executives derail his dreams.

Plan Nine From Outer Space
This popular cult classic is director Ed Wood's "Citizen Kane". Plan 9 is considered a hymn to everyone who has tried to create something and failed miserably.

Deep End
This is a film of blackmail, murder and love that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat. Gorgeous cinematography and superb acting make this one of the top independent films of the year. " A stunningly tight and evocative thriller with remarkable performances.." (R Rating)

The Business of Strangers
This stylish film offers a brilliant performance by Stockard Channing as an aggressive executive thrown together with a young assistant (Julia Stiles) for a night of debauchery, deception and ultimately, self-discovery. Beautifully shot by Teodoro Maniaci. Recipient of the SKYY Prize at this year's San Francisco International Film Festival. (R Rating)

Keep The River On The Right
"Keep the River on Your Right": a modern cannibal tale tells the story of Tobias Schneebaum who in 1955 disappeared in the Peruvian Amazon. Seven months later he emerged from the jungle naked and covered in body paint. His story of being adopted by the Amarakaire Indians and participating in a hunting raid which culminating in killing and cannibalism, is also a story of a man coming to terms with his past. (R Rating).

Tobias Schneebaum himself was guest of honor ad the panel discussion following the screening of this movie.

Innocence
A story about a music teacher who seeks out his first love 40 years after they parted. It's wonderful heartfelt story from Australia of two mature people rediscovering love with hard-won wisdom and a poignant, burning passion. "·the year's most romantic film!"

The Vanishing American
One of the film industry's most controversial silent movies, the 1925 copy comes to us from the Library of Congress. It's based upon Zane Grey's book and shows us how Native Americans were mistreated. It offers a stirring tribute to their survival in the face of environmental, governmental and inter-tribal hardship. An epic-scaled historic melodrama rarely seen.

Loren Grey, Zane Grey's son, was guest of honor at the Panel Discussion following the screening of "The Vanishing American".

Baraka
Closing Film Set to the life affirming rhythms of different religious rituals and nature's own raw beat, this is a visualization of the way humans connect and share with the earth. Baraka captures harmony and the calamity that humans and nature visited upon the earth. " An awesome cinematic world tour."
