In its third year, the Black Bear Film Festival continued to showcase the most enjoyable and thought-provoking independent films from around the world. Critically acclaimed as a "local phenomenon that will bring joy to all lovers of great film", "put together with extreme finesse, superb taste and enormous vigor"!

SNEAK PEEK: Thursday night's feature film was an exquisitely acted drama entitled THE HEART OF ME, starring Helena Bonham Carter, directed by Thaddeus O'Sullivan, and set in 1930s London & the Isle of Mann. The Fantasia-like 10-minute feature short from Canada, LOON DREAMING, preceded the feature. Great start to the Festival!

BORDER A Film Short about an old man and a goose have much in common until they reach a border crossing in the middle of nowhere.Rare Birds Director and producer, Annette Solakoglu took questions after the film.

RARE BIRDS A down-and-out restaurateur (William Hurt) and his neighbor (Andy Jones) hatch an eccentric plan to lure clientele to his failing business. Rare Birds’ oddball story, set along Newfoundland’s dramatic coastal cliffs, is a smart, wry comedy that will leave you smiling. Rated R. Director Sturla Gunnarsson took questions after the filming.

TAINAH, AN AMAZON ADVENTURE This wonderful children’s film from Brazil follows eight-year-old Tainah as she travels through the Amazon rainforest to save the local animals from poachers. Voted as best film by both children and adult juries at this year’s Chicago International Children’s Film Festival. For all ages.

THEY WON’T FORGET Allyn Joslyn's first feature film, with gripping courtroom drama directed by Mervyn LeRoy and inspired by the 1913 Mary Phagan murder case. Tainah, An Amazon Adventure

DAUGHTER FROM DANANG In 1975 at the end of the war, thousands of orphans arrived here in the US from Vietnam during "Operation Babylift." This insightful documentary follows one young woman’s journey back to Vietnam to reunite with her birth mother. This poignant film is a Sundance award winner. Director Gail Dolgin took questions after the screening.

I WAKE UP SCREAMING A prime example of film noir starring Betty Grable and Victor Mature, Allyn Joslyn appears in a supporting role as newspaper columnist Larry Evans. Packed with suspense and plot twists!

MY SISTER EILEEN The film from which the Broadway musical Wonderful Town is based, "My Sister Eileen" is a fast-paced comedy featuring Allyn Joslyn as Chic Clark (you guessed it, a reporter!) Fast Runner

FAST RUNNER (Atanarjuat) An astonishing epic film made by and about the Inuit people of the Canadian arctic, tells a story of a crime that ruptures the trust within a closely-knit group, and how justice is achieved and healing begins. The brilliant cinematography and the tenacity and creativity of a people making a home of the frigid wilderness leaves the audience astounded.

ONLY ANGELS HAVE WINGS Watch for Allyn Joslyn as Les Peters attempting to pick up Jean Arthur as the movie begins (he should know that Cary Grant always gets the girl). The Accountant

THE ACCOUNTANT This year’s very funny Academy Award winning live-action short poses the question "Can one hard drinking, chain-smoking, backwoods accountant save the family farm?"

THOTH The uniquely talented Thoth and his eccentric musical performances are explored in this year’s Academy Award winning documentary film. Co-producer, Academy Award- winner Lynne Appelle answered questions after the film, and star Thoth performed at the theatre live on Monday, October 14th.

THE LAST WALTZ This restored print of Martin Scorseses’ document of several legendary performance by guest artists of “The Band”’s final performance.

ROGER DODGER This very funny and well-written film tells the story of a womanizing ad executive (Campbell Scott) who takes his teenage nephew (Jesse Eisenberg) out for a night on the town in order to show him the ways of the world. This Tribeca Film Festival award winner will have everyone talking. Rated R. Cast Member Jesse Eisenberg answered questions after the film (including "What was it like to kiss Jennifer Beals?!")

THE LAST PICTURE SHOW One of the most acclaimed movies of the 1970’s, this snapshot of the 1950’s captures the frustration and monotany of growing up in small town America.VIY

VIY This humorously tinged horror movie about a young priest that makes the big mistake of not showing proper respect to a local witch is a Russian classic. With sublime art direction and stunning cinematography, this ghost story is our early Halloween treat.

A HOUSE WITH A VIEW OF THE SEA Gloriously filmed in the foothills of the Andes, the dreams of a widowed father and his son shelter their quiet relationship from the cruelty of neighbors, until a desperate act of violence tears them apart. It takes the brave intervention of a stranger to reunite them once again in the place of their dreams. Director Alberto Mendoza and cast member Leandro Arvelo answered questions after the filming.

ZOOKEEPER Set in a zoo in the Balkans during a bombing siege, the film is gritty and realistic as well as poetically allegorical, showing the effects of war on both man and beast. The Zookeeper is an incredibly moving film with a beautifully judged performance from Sam Neill. Mature Audience.Dangerous Blondes Director Ralph Ziman & co-producer Michael Laursen took questions after the screening.

DANGEROUS BLONDES Milford Pennsylvania's own Allyn Joslyn (1901-1981) stars as detective fiction writer Barry Craig in this seldom-seen b-movie classic... a murder mystery sprinkled with delightful moments of wit and humor.

THE MUPPET MOVIE The original cameo filled movie that propelled the Muppets even further into stardom is followed by a special LIVE appearance of one of the muppets - the rarely seen Sweetums! Rated G. See what Muppet Central has to say about our Festival!

LIFE ON A STRING A film short and a meditation on life in New York City inspired by five songs by Laurie Anderson

Personal VelocityPERSONAL VELOCITY Winner of this year’s Top Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, Personal Velocity tells the stories of three women who escap from their afflicted lives as each one struggles to flee the man who confines their personal freedom. Superbly acted and intelligently directed by Rebecca Miller, this film promises to be another festival favorite. Mature Audience.

THE IRON GIANT This not-so-old but less-know feature is one of the best animated features you’ll ever see. Parents will agree! Rated G.

STANDING IN THE SHADOWS OF MOTOWN The Funk Brothers, the unheralded group of musicians gathered by Berry Gordy in 1959 from Detroit’s thriving jazz and blues scene, have played on more number one hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis and the Beatles combined. This hotly anticipated documentary reunites the Funk Brothers back in Detroit to play their music and tell their unforgettable story. Rated PG.

THE HIDDEN FORTRESS A wonderful children’s film from Canada that takes place at a summer lake campground, full of mud fights, secret hideouts, tree houses and bees! This outdoor adventure will have more than the children heartily entertained. All ages.The Slaughter Rule

THE SLAUGHTER RULE The Slaughter Rule is an engrossing, frequently brilliant first feature by brothers Andrew and Alex Smith. It’s the story of a Montana teenager (Ryan Gosling) recruited by a lonely man (David Morse) to play on his six-man football team. This film, for mature audiences, sayssomething vital about the construction of masculinity, the quest for independence, and the nature of autonomy. The filmmakers call The Slaughter Rule "a rough season in a young man’s life, a season of exposure, prejudice,and ultimately – compassion." Mature Audiences. Producer Robert Hawk & Cast Member David Cale answered questions after the filming.

THE HIRED HAND This splendid restoration of Peter Fonda’s 1971 classic western is a perfect way to close this year’s festival. A true cinematic gem, The Hired Hand is the story of a cowboy and his sidekick who returns home to the wife and daughter he abandoned seven years earlier. Once again, he is thrust into a situation where he must make the difficult choice of loyalties between his wife and his best friend.
