The State of Pennsylvania and Pike County offer grants to selected non-profit organizations, such as the Black Bear Film Festival, who contribute to the cultural enhancement and economic development of the area. The money can be used for educational seminars, programs and films geared toward young people and to help with payment for operating costs. Last year the Festival received, among others:
- $10,000 from the PA Department of Community and Economic Development with the help of Senator Charles Lemmond, Jr.
- $5,000 from the Pennsylvania Film Office with the help of Director Brian Kreider and support of the Schweiker Administration
- $3,350 matching grant from the Pike County Commissioners & the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts with the help of Executive Director Chris Obser of Pike County Community Planning and Human Development
- An additional $1,000 from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
A lot of hard work goes into preparing and submitting the grant proposals in the correct format and by specific deadlines. Much of the credit for this work can be given to people like Nick Viscome (professional grant writer) and volunteers Nancy and Geoff Pitcher, Carol Coscia and Gabriela Arizan.
These grants are proof positive that the Black Bear Film Festival has garnered important attention and support. It has become a prestigious community event that is noticed way beyond the boundaries of Pike County, attracting an audience from New York and beyond.
